Sucess Story
Manuela is a true Literacy Network success story. She has made incredible progress in her English skills through her work with a tutor and in our group classes. The result is increased independence, an ability to advocate for herself, better access to health care, and a stronger connection to our community. Her learning will continue. As she has said to her tutor, "two more years...and then GOODBYE, TERRI." After her tutor shared a hurt look, Manuela smiled, fully in control of the scene and added, "and then...we are friends."
Throughout the year, we have been amazed at how Manuela's skills have improved. As part of the follow-up from our health literacy class, the teacher noted that Manuela made her own doctor's appointment in front of her son and husband--both were surprised and proud of the fact that she speaks English. She also asked a pharmacist questions about a cold medicine and made an appointment at a community clinic at the recommendation of one of our guest speakers. Her tutor, Terri, notes that "she can now more easily advocate for herself from requesting a review of a bill she believes is mistaken to setting up appointments or explaining problems, all in English." Manuela shares that she and her tutor "..have done many things. Sometimes we do things that are fun and sometimes we do things that are difficult for me but Terri is very understanding with me. Since I have been practicing with Terri I can speak English when it's necessary. "
Her tutor shares that she has "…watched Manuela's proficiency and confidence grow. I have attempted to give Manuela tools, practice, exposure, and of course my support. But it is Manuela who deserves the credit for what she has achieved. She works hard and tirelessly, propelled by a sense of how much learning English matters, on so many levels. Her determination and courage doesn't even slightly surprise me for I have heard her story. Without a doubt she has negotiated much more difficult challenges."
In Manuela's words, "Literacy Network gives opportunities for all [learners] to learn and speak English. Personally I am appreciative of what this organization does."
Manuela is by no means our only ESL success story. Learners come to us with many different goals related to work, health care, financial literacy, future schooling, family, and life in our community. Other examples include:
- Pulcherie who completed the MATC "Women in the Trades" overview. She plans to interview in March to become an electrician apprentice.
- This fall it became Jesus's responsibility to make sure his children finish their homework after school. He has learned to read enough English to be able to catch his son skipping over words or lines when reading aloud and he has been able to help his 1st grade daughter learn her letters and colors.
- Maria has recently asked her daughters to text her in English instead of Spanish.
